Snowflake vs Databricks in 2026: how we actually decide

8 min

The Snowflake-vs-Databricks question gets asked in every kickoff. Here's how we actually answer it.

Three signals that matter

  1. ML workload depth. If you're running production ML beyond the occasional regression model — recommendation engines, vision pipelines, anything Spark-shaped — Databricks' lakehouse model removes friction Snowflake adds.
  2. Semi-structured data volume. JSON, logs, event data at high volume favors Databricks. Snowflake handles it, but you pay in compute and developer ergonomics.
  3. Operational appetite. Snowflake demands less of your team day-to-day. Databricks rewards investment but punishes neglect.

What does not decide it

  • Cost. They land within 15% of each other for most workloads after a year of optimization. Migration cost dwarfs steady-state cost.
  • BI tool fit. Both connect to everything modern. SSRS is a different conversation.
  • "AI strategy." If your AI strategy hinges on platform choice, your AI strategy needs more thought first.

Where AI changes the math (a little)

Both vendors now ship serious AI surfaces — Snowflake Cortex for in-warehouse models, retrieval, and Cortex Analyst, and Databricks Mosaic AI for the Agent Framework, MLflow GenAI, and lakehouse-native Vector Search. If your roadmap leans heavily on production ML or generative AI inside the platform perimeter, that tilts the call. For most BI-shaped workloads, it doesn't.

The straight answer

For BI-heavy workloads run by smaller teams, Snowflake often wins because it generally requires less day-to-day platform work. When deep production ML or Spark-native processing is central to the workload, Databricks can win decisively. Forcing either platform onto the wrong workload creates unnecessary friction.

Don't pick the platform first. Pick the workload profile, then the platform falls out.
